What Is Lorem Ipsum? The 500-Year-Old Placeholder Text
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. Every designer has typed it, most have never questioned it, and almost nobody knows it is mangled Cicero from 45 BC.
Here is the real history of placeholder text, what the words mean, why it persists in an era of better options, and the specific situations where using it will cost you.

It is corrupted Cicero
The source is De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum — On the Ends of Good and Evil — a treatise on ethics written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. A passage from it discusses why pain is worth enduring for a greater good.
At some point a typesetter took that passage and destroyed it deliberately: words altered, letters removed, fragments rearranged until the Latin became grammatically improper and semantically empty. The opening is the giveaway — lorem is not a Latin word at all. It is the tail of dolorem, meaning pain, with the first syllable chopped off mid-word. Lorem ipsum is literally a fragment of pain itself.
How it reached your design tool
The scrambled text circulated in the printing trade for centuries as a way to show typefaces without meaning getting in the way. It broke into the mainstream in the 1960s, when Letraset printed it on the dry-transfer lettering sheets that designers used to lay out artwork by hand.
The digital jump came in the mid-1980s: Aldus used it in templates for PageMaker, the program that essentially created desktop publishing. From there it propagated into every layout tool, word processor, and website theme, which is why the same corrupted Latin appears in software written decades apart on every continent.
Why meaningless text is the point
The purpose is not laziness — it is removing a variable. Put real copy in a mockup and every reviewer reads it, and the meeting becomes about the words instead of the layout. Put obviously fake text there and attention stays on spacing, hierarchy, line length, and type colour.
Lorem ipsum works better than random letters because its word lengths and letter frequencies roughly mimic Latin-alphabet prose, so paragraphs form realistic shapes and line breaks fall naturally. It also fails safely: nobody will accidentally publish it believing it is finished copy, which is a genuine risk with plausible-sounding filler.
Our Lorem Ipsum generator produces it by the word, sentence, or paragraph, with a toggle for whether to start from the classic opening.
The case against it
The main criticism is that design decisions made against meaningless text are decisions made against a fantasy. Real headlines are awkward lengths. Real product names break in the middle. Real users write reviews with no paragraph breaks. A layout that only looks good with perfectly even Latin paragraphs is a layout that has not been tested.
There is also a practical failure mode: placeholder text that ships. It happens regularly enough that lorem ipsum has appeared in printed newspapers, shipped mobile apps, and live product pages. If you use it, add lorem to your pre-launch search checklist.
When to use real content instead
Use placeholder text early, when you are testing composition and typography and the copy genuinely does not exist yet. Switch to real or realistic content before any decision about hierarchy, truncation, or responsive behaviour — those need actual worst-case strings, not tidy Latin.
For interfaces specifically, content-first design has largely won the argument: write the real button labels, error messages, and empty states first, because those words are the interface. Lorem ipsum has no useful role in a settings screen.
Alternatives worth knowing
Themed generators swap the Latin for cupcake ingredients, pirate speak, corporate jargon, or Bacon Ipsum, which is fun in early mockups but can be distracting for the same reason real copy is. Some teams prefer realistic dummy content — plausible names, addresses, and product descriptions — which surfaces layout problems that Latin hides. Others use the actual worst case: the longest German compound word their product will ever display, or a name with no spaces at all.
A pragmatic mix works well: lorem ipsum for pure typography and grid work, then realistic stress-test content before anything is signed off.
Does lorem ipsum hurt SEO?
Directly, no — there is no penalty aimed at Latin filler specifically. Indirectly, yes, and it matters. Search engines evaluate whether a page delivers something useful, and a page of placeholder text delivers nothing, so it can be judged thin or low quality. Worse, if the page gets crawled and indexed in that state, that snapshot is what appears in results until the next crawl, which can be days or weeks after you fixed it.
If a page is not ready, the correct move is to keep it out of the index — leave it unpublished, or block it with noindex until real content lands. Shipping lorem ipsum to a live URL and hoping nobody notices is a gamble against your own crawl budget.
Generate what you need
Our Lorem Ipsum generator produces up to 50 paragraphs, sentences, or words at a time, entirely in your browser. If you need filler at an exact length, check it against our Word Counter, and for random English words rather than Latin, the Random Words tool draws from a common-word list.
