Unicode includes a block called Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms, created so East Asian text — where characters are traditionally drawn in fixed square cells — could sit in the same monospaced grid as Latin letters on early computer displays. A fullwidth A takes up the same visual width as a Japanese kanji character, which is why A looks stretched compared to an ordinary A.
