Is Morse Code Still Used Today? Where It Actually Survives
Morse code is old — it dates to the 1830s and 1840s, decades before the telephone existed — and it's easy to assume it's purely historical at this point, something that shows up in movies and nowhere else. It isn't. A surprising number of fields still use it deliberately, not out of nostalgia but because it has specific technical properties that are genuinely hard to replace.
Here's where dots and dashes actually survive in the modern world, and why.
Amateur radio: still a living, tested skill
Ham radio operators use Morse code — referred to as CW, for 'continuous wave,' in the hobby — because it cuts through noise and weak signal conditions that would make voice communication completely unintelligible. A CW signal needs far less bandwidth and far less signal strength to be decoded than a voice transmission, so operators can make contact across continents on minimal power where a voice call would be pure static. Some countries' amateur radio licensing still tests Morse proficiency, and there's an active competitive scene built entirely around fast CW copying.
Aviation and maritime: identification, not conversation
Aircraft VOR and NDB navigation beacons still broadcast a short Morse identifier — a two or three letter code — so pilots can audibly confirm they've tuned the correct beacon rather than a neighboring one on a similar frequency. It's not used for communication in flight; it's a simple, unambiguous identity check that predates and outlived more elaborate alternatives. Maritime distress signaling has moved on from Morse to GMDSS digital systems, but SOS — three dots, three dashes, three dots — remains recognizable as the universal distress signal even to people who know no other Morse at all.
Why it survives: it degrades gracefully
The property that keeps Morse code relevant isn't tradition, it's that a human can still often make out a Morse signal buried in noise that would completely destroy a digital data packet — a corrupted bit in a digital transmission is just gone, but a scratchy, partially-obscured series of dots and dashes is often still recoverable by a trained ear. That graceful degradation under bad conditions, plus a low bandwidth requirement, is genuinely hard to beat for niche cases like weak-signal amateur radio contacts and emergency signaling, even a century after it stopped being the primary form of long-distance communication.
